Try out these bet types:

Winner

This is when you bet on a particular horse to win a race. The lower the odds are, the more of a favourite with the bookies that horse is to win. You can also check a horse’s form by clicking on the race and looking at the “form” column where you can see where the horse placed in previous races. Read this from right to left; the number will be the position they came in, and if it’s a zero it means the horse did not place in the top 10.

Each Way

Combine outcomes in this bet. Choose a horse to win the race, and to place, i.e. come in first, second or third position overall. If the horse wins the race, you win both bets and get both payouts, if it places but does not win, you’ll win your Each Way payout.

Place/Position

Bet on a horse to come in the top three or four depending on the number of horses in the race. There is also a market to select the exact position that the horse will finish.

Ante Post Betting

This allows you to get in on races ahead of time, before the final field has been decided, so the odds are always better. The risk is if the horse you bet on doesn’t make the final field, in which case you will lose your bet.

Tax Scratch is exclusive to Betway. As a part of horse racing betting, it is required by law that all winnings are taxed 6%, so, for example, if you win R100, your return would be cut down to R94. Pick your horses and go into the cumulative pool of punters when you place Tote bets. Everyone who wins their bet gets a share of the payout, meaning if you backed a horse that was unpopular and it wins, you’ll get a greater share of the win. Exacta, Trifecta, Quartet

These are bet types that focus on predicting the exact finishes of a particular horse:

• Exacta: bet on the horses to finish first and second in the exact order.
• Trifecta: bet on the horses to finish first, second and third in the exact order.
• Quartet: bet on the horses to finish first, second, third and fourth in the exact order.

The horses must finish in the exact positions that you chose in order for your bet to win.
